THE NAMES OF THE DAYS

How did the days of the week get their names?

The days of the week were named after the sun and the moon and the five planets which are also the names of the old roman gods and goddesses.

The ancient Romans named the first two days of the week in honor of the sun and the moon, and so we call them Sunday(sun'sday)and Monday(moon's day).

The other five days were named for Mars,Mercury,Jupiter,Venus, and Saturn.

The Anglo-Saxons,a Germanic people who settled in England long ago and from whose language our English names come, changed the Roman names for four days and named them after their own gods.

Tuesday was the day of the Tow(Tiw's day),the war god.Wednesday was named in honor of Woden(Woden's day),leader of their gods.Thursday was the day of Thor(Thor's day),god of thunder, and,Friday the day of Frig, queen of their gods.

The Roman "Saturn's day"remained as Saturday.
